Back to School

Today was officially back to school day in our house.

Rylee heading to first grade. Full day! and Reese heading back to daycare, only this year she will be full time in the two year old class.

Rylee was a nervous/excited hybrid for her first day of first grade. Last week I took her in to find out who her teacher is for the year, look at her class list, check out her classroom and drop off her supplies. Her teacher is a mom of one of her daycare friends and her best friend is in her class. That helped ease the nerves a bit I think. She asked me to take her to school nonetheless.

We dropped Reese off first. Reese was super excited as we were walking in the door at daycare. She had even been cheering on the drive. But the second we walked into the drop-off room she froze up and wanted to be held. She laid her head on my shoulder and didn’t want to get down. I could tell she was right on the verge of tears. It was sweet and sad all at the same time. But cereal bar and banana to the rescue! Crisis averted. We kissed goodbye and as Ry & I walked out she was happily munching on her cereal bar.

As Rylee and I drove back to the school we chatted about the after school plan, since she will be riding a different bus than she did last year. She was clearly annoyed I kept bringing it up. I asked her if she was ok with me just dropping her off in the drop-off line and she asked that park and I walk her up to the school. I had to park across the street from the school and as we walked up, she held my hand. As soon as we got to the door of the school I asked if she was good or if she wanted me to walk with her all the way to her classroom. She asked me to walk all the way with her and I obliged. I mean, how many more years will she want me to do this, I thought. The second we walked in the school? She dropped my hand and walked 2 steps ahead of me. Ha, go figure.

I made sure she was settled in her room, threw her a high 5 and told her to have an awesome day. She wrapped her arms around me and squeezed tight.

This year is going to be pretty great.

My grossest parenting moment yet

I officially had my grossest parenting moment a few weeks ago. One of those so gross you can’t believe this is real life/can’t help but laugh kind of moments.

Scene: watching Rylee’s TBall game, sitting in the grass eating Subway for dinner.

Keep in mind Reese has been potty training. Overall she does pretty well. So much so we’ve been a bit more brave when it comes to taking her out in public in chonies. But for whatever reason this night was not so awesome…

Oh yes, this is one of THOSE stories. I’m mostly noting it here so I can hold it against Reese when she gets older.

So there we are, sitting on the grass eating Subway. I’m just finishing up my sandwich, about to grab some chips when Reese stands up and proclaims, “I POOP!” Not a crazy thing to hear her say, that girls loves the porta-potties {harf!}. So I say to her, “You need to go potty, Reese?” And she responds with “NO I POOP!” and proceeds to motion toward her butt. Where I look and see the silhouette of something definitely poop-like through her leggings.

Oye.

Andy offers to take her to the car to get her changed, but he’s not done eating and I am, so I get up. At first I let her walk toward the car. It’s a pretty far walk and as we go along I see her leggings start to get…saggy.

We need to speed this up.

I pick her up, trying carefully not to put any pressure on her little bum. At some point during the longest walk to the car in the history of mankind she gets a little wiggly so I need to adjust her. I look down at my arm and sure enough my sweater cuff has poop on it.

Yup, the poop has soaked through her underwear. And pants. And onto my sweater.

Keep cool, Kat. Don’t panic. Hurry hurry to the car.

We finally get to the car. Thank goodness we keep extra towels back there! I have the foresight to take off her socks and shoes before we…proceed. I can’t decide if I want her to stand up or lie down.

So I won’t go into too much detail but trust me. It was…gross. So much so that I went through every single baby wipe in the diaper bag and still could have used a few more.

As for her pants and underwear? Yea, I put those bad boys in a plastic bag with the wipes, picking them up like a dog walker picks up dog poop in the park, and that bag went straight into the outside garbage when we got home.

STRAIGHT TO THE TRASH.

It was that gross.

Then she got a bath.

We never did make it back to finish watching the TBall game.

The end.

I hope I never, ever have to go through something like that again. Ever.

A 21 month update

Is that a thing? Eh whatever, considering my lack of consistent blogging these days I’ll go ahead and make it a thing.

Reese, you turned 21 months last weekend. You have been changing and growing so much recently that I wanted to take a minute to document it before I forget it.

Food: You still love your groceries. You are super into chips and salsa. Yes…real-deal salsa. Nothing seems to phase you when it comes to food. Sure there are some things you don’t like, but for the most part you will eat whatever is put in front of you. It really helps getting your sister to be less picky too, so thanks for that!

Movement: Oh child, sometimes it seems like you never.stop.moving. You always want to be picked up. You still have a thing for ears. You climb, run and try to follow your sister no matter where she goes.

Potty Training: Believe me, I never imagined I’d be writing anything about your potty training on the interwebs, let alone before you turn two but you are blowing my mind, kid! I’m not saying you are potty trained, but you’re wearing chonies off and on and you’re doing an awesome job using the toilet more than your diaper. I definitely wanted you potty trained before number three makes their debut, but I had no idea you’d show an interest so soon! It’s both great and a challenge but you are pretty much rocking it for your age and I am so proud of you!

Talking: You are talking more and more every day. You can be quite the little parrot, which is often hilarious. You’re saying sentences. No surprise, one of your first sentences was “I HUNGRY!”. 9 out of 10 times during any given meal time out of nowhere you will loudly proclaim “I HAPPY!” One of your favorite conversations to have right now goes like this “Mama. Mama! MAMA!” “Yes Reesie?” “Ummmmm….um. Um. Um.” Then you laugh hysterically. It’s hilarious and annoying all at once.

Dante: Just like your sister did at this age, you love your Dante. You love to greet him when we get home each night. You squat down and get right at his level when he’s lying down and make sure to say “Hi…hi Buddy!” while patting him on his head. When we leave in the morning you are first out the door, making sure to tell him “SIT!” while pointing at the ground then giving him his treat and declaring “good boy.”

Other things you love: {brought to you by the letter B apparently} Bubbles. The Easter Bunny may have brought you that bubble machine just so mama wouldn’t have to blow so many bubbles. Books. You can often be found looking at books. You love to have books read to you. Binkie. You are nowhere near ready to get rid of your binkie…much to my dismay. Baby. You’re all sorts of interested in your sisters baby doll these days. You pretend to feed it. You put it in the basket of your shopping cart, cover it with a blanket and take it for a walk. You rock it. You lay it on the floor and yell “Nigh-nigh baby!” Your daycare teacher just had a baby, so I’m assuming that’s where this interest is coming from.

You continue to amaze me, kiddo. You have an infectious joy and a spunky little attitude. You are fierce. I know I say it all the time, but I hope you never change.

Currently…Reese at 18 Months

Reesie-bug, last weekend you turned 18 months old. One and a half years you’ve been with our family now. Life is crazy, but that’s status quo these days and you fit right in. In the vein of “life is crazy” your 18 month well-check isn’t for over a month yet. So, instead of that typical update, which I may still do, I thought it’d be fun to do a snap-shot of where you’re at right now.
20140124-123100.jpg

appreciating pretty much everything. You are so polite…you tell people thank you all the time…especially at meal time when you’re given a bite of something you really love…like a chip. You also say bless you, excuse you and you even say “excuse me” when you burp.

reading the same books over and over again. Right now your two favorites are Eric Carl’s “From Head to Toe” and a book called “I’m a Frog” that’s about a pig that pretends to be a frog and her elephant friend that’s not ok with it.
20140124-122830.jpg

listening only when you feel like it. You’ve mastered selective hearing and you aren’t even two yet. Bravo? Though there are times you surprise me with choosing to listen…like the other day when I was dropping you off at daycare and we happened to be in the big kid room and you ran over to the lego table and dug right in. I made some comment to you about “You know you’re not supposed to be playing with those” and I figured I’d be ignored. Instead you put the legos back in the tubs and ran over to me with a huge smile on your face.
20140124-122804.jpg

tasting all of the things. You love almost everything we put in front of you…most recently cous cous. And you even ate some red pepper last night. Some of your favorites are bananas, spaghetti and of course, TACO TUESDAY! When it comes to things you won’t eat, it’s a pretty short list that’s topped off with mac-n-cheese…you crazy kid.
20140124-122842.jpg

learning at a rate that does not compute with my brain.

noticing EVERYTHING. You are so observant. And you are such a little mimicker. You want to do everything your sister does.
20140124-122810.jpg

making all sorts of noises. You’ve become a babble-extraordinnaire and I love listening to you and having a “conversation” with you.

watching too much TV. Being a second child is funny that way. When you wake up in the morning you go get the remote and hand it to whomever you think will turn on cartoons for you. You especially love Wild Kratts and Curious George.

organizing a revolution…I’m sure of it. One that starts with waking up every morning at 5:20 a.m., yelling “MAMA!” in the car until I hold your hand and ends with your mother drinking copious amounts of wine or whiskey every night. Just kidding…I don’t drink every night. What your next step in this war is, I’m unsure, but I know all will be revealed soon…you’re just wearing me down.
20140124-122752.jpg

loving in no particular order: food, Dante, your sister, your binkie, cuddling, brushing your teeth, playing with our ears, ripping toilet paper into tiny pieces and trying to put them in the toilet by sticking them between my legs while I’m peeing and so much more.
20140124-122859.jpg

embracing anyone who will accept a hug. Despite your fierce nature, you are a cuddle bug and you love “giving loves”. You’re an excellent hug giver and can brighten anyone’s day with just one squeeze.

daring. That’s it. You are so daring. You have no fear, it seems. From climbing to “jumping” there’s nothing you aren’t willing to try. I hope you never lose that spirit.

Little girl, you are fierce. The twinkle in your eye and the crinkle of your nose leaves me constantly wondering what’s going on in that brain of yours.

I know I’ve said it before, but you bring so much joy to our family.

I love you baby girl.

Christmas Magic

The moment of Christmas Magic officially hit me this year. It came at about 10:30 PM on Christmas Eve as I flopped myself down on the couch after the last gift was assembled…completely exhausted. I pictured the look on Rylee’s face when she saw the pile of gifts under {and around} the tree. How she might react when she realized Santa had come. How excited she would be when she opened her “big gift” from Santa. I imagined how much Reese would enjoy playing with her gifts.

I thought back to all my years of childhood and how much I loved Christmas growing up. Right then is when it hit me.

My parents created this magic for me every year. And not just for me, but for my 3 siblings as well. I never once thought about it before that moment. But right then, I could picture my parents staying up late on Christmas Eve…filling our stockings, pulling gifts from hiding places, finishing last minute wrapping.

Now here I am, getting to create the Magic of Christmas for my kids.

Parenthood is truly a trip. And you better believe the very next day I made sure to thank my parents for all of their hard work over the years keeping that Christmas Magic alive.

*****

We scaled back our typical Christmas decorations this year because of a certain mischievous almost one and a half year old. I put up the Advent calendar for the second year in a row, though Rylee didn’t seem particularly interested in too many of the activities. I didn’t push it. We didn’t have our annual “Sisters Baking Night”. When it came to opening gifts, Reese wanted nothing to do with any of it. I think it was sensory overload for her.

Rylee, on the other hand is right at the perfect age for the Magic of Christmas. This is the first year she truly got it. She colored Santa a picture and rolled it up in her stocking for him to find. She left Rudolf and the other reindeer celery {we were out of carrots} and was thrilled to see that they were gone when she woke up Christmas morning. When she visited Santa earlier in November, she told Santa she wanted an iPod touch. At first, I thought there was no way in hell Santa would bring her one of those…then somewhere along the way, Santa had a change of heart and ended up reformatting my old iPhone; loading it with {free} games and some of her favorite music. Santa even left a little note typed out to read when she turned it on. We hardly took any photos, and we didn’t take any video but her reaction to all that is something I will remember forever.

Christmas this year was exactly what I was expecting, yet nothing like what I was expecting all at the same time.

Overall? The magic was there, and it was perfect.

Our Nativity had a couple extras this year…apparently there was no room at the Inn for Mickey or Minnie either.
