Some of my favorite things!

Father’s Day weekend was a flat-out fantastic weekend. But I’m not here to talk about that.

I’ll get to it later.

And yes, I know it’s unlike me to go out of chronological order, and it’s killing me a little bit, but last night was just too awesome not to share right now.

{and also easier/less time consuming…just being honest here, folks.}

We took Rylee to her first baseball game.

Of course, there’s a lot of you that are probably like…neat, Kat. What’s the big deal here?

Well, here’s the thing. It was probably way.more.awesome. for me than it was for the kid.

Last night had so many of my favorite things wrapped up into one!

First of all, I love-love-LOVE baseball. I grew up going to Em’s games {our local minor league team}. I have such fun memories as a kid going to these games. Andy loves baseball. I love watching him watch a sport he loves. I mean, he’d much rather be playing than watching, but whatever. Then there’s the whole thing that baseball means summer! SUMMER!! Yay! And of course there’s the snacks…locally made ice cream served up in a “batter’s helmet” bowl. Nachos. Pepsi. Popcorn.

Ach, I just love everything about it.

Now throw in the fact that I got to go with my 2 favorite people in the world. And we had some pretty kick-ace seats {thank you Em’s for those awesome tickets!}.

It was a recipe for a great night.

For being 4 years old, and for her very first game, Ry did pretty well. She got antsy a couple of times. During the 4th inning we got up and stood in line for the ice cream and snacks, that helped break things up. Then she was occupied with eating as much popcorn as she could shove in her mouth for the next few innings. At the top of the 7th, she told us she was ready to go. We stayed to watch the Em’s bat one more time then we took off. {It was also about 9:30 PM…way past her bedtime!}

This night at the ball park was just what we needed after a stressful spot after work….the Buick died on me during my drive home last night…twice. {For the record? Figuring out your hazard lights don’t work when you actually need them is less than ideal} Andy had to meet me at my dad’s (about halfway between work and home) and then we had to get home, eat dinner and rush to the game. All the while trying to figure out next steps with this car. Blech. But like I said earlier, more on that later.

Hooray for summer!!!

Here We Go Again: June Update

How far along? 34 weeks, 4 days
Total weight gain/loss: +28 {Yep, another 5 pounds in 2 weeks. And that’s AFTER cutting out extra crap and upping my fruit & veggie intake. You know what that means? All the ice creams are belonging to ME!}
Stretch marks? For all you haters mad that I haven’t got any…you’ll be happy. I got a stretch mark right over where my belly-bottun ring used to be. Weird.
Maternity Clothes: With the nicer weather, I’ve been able to get away with a few non-maternity outfits.
Sleep: I go back and forth on this. Some nights are great, other nights, not so much. I got up FOUR TIMES one night to pee. Ridiculous, yo.
Best moment this month: Good question. Nothing that stands out, honestly. But nothing has been bad either, so that’s good, right!?
Movement: She’s still on a pretty steady movement schedule. My belly gets totally contorted at times. It’s so weird. But, still no footprints.
Gender: Girl
Labor Signs: Braxton hicks contractions have started back up here and there.
Food Cravings: Nope.
Belly Button in or out? Outtie. Dude, someone told me my belly looks like a giant boob and my belly button is the nipple. And it’s cold out.
What I miss: Same as last time…Sleeping through the night. Bending over easily.
What I am looking forward to: Good question. I’m in the inbetween stage right now…I can’t believe we’re less than 6 weeks from my due date and feel nowhere near “ready” but at the same time, I can’t wait to meet our little girl. Craziness, I tell you.
Baby Milestones: Baby weighs close to 5 lbs now. She’ll continue to gain weight but is probably about as long {tall?} as she’ll be at birth.
Other Goodness: Well, we got her new car seat delivered last week. I found the changing pad covers {and a bunch of other stuff I forgot we had!}. Last night, Rylee kissed my belly and said “I love you cute little sister!” Then looked up to me and said “I hope I get to meet her soon.” I nearly died.

My next appointment is June 28 and the first of the pants off variety!

Rylee wanted to be in this week’s picture with Sister. {I love the way she says sister}

Rylee demonstrating for me the “on the hip” way to hold a baby!

And now the one-handed cradle hold. She’s practicing up!

Parents Magazine Announces their Picks for Best Family Cars of 2012

Of course when I see anything about cars come up now, my ears/eyes perk up. Partly because of my partnership/relationship with Toyota and partly because I know within the next year or so we’ll be doing some car shopping of our own. And even though our next vehicle will mainly be Andy’s daily driver {AKA racking up the high miles}, it also needs to be family friends. Beacuse, well, have you seen the state of my belly lately!?

So, when I saw the link for Parents Magazines “Best Family Cars of 2012” I had to click through to see what they thought.

They broke it down into 5 categories: High Mileage, Budget Friendly, Crossovers, Sedans and Large Vehicles.

Here’s what Parents Magazine top picks were {with comments from the peanut gallery, because obviously.}…

High Gas Mileage: Toyota Prius V, Honda Civic Hybrid and Chevy Cruz EVO.

Obviously, I was totally stoked to see the Prius V come up. And it was even mentioned first out of the three!

Budget Friendly: Chevy Sonic, Ford Focus and Hyundai Elantra

To be honest, I don’t know much about any of these vehicles but considering they all start right around $15k and all get 26 mpg city (or better!) these will be worth checking out when it does come time for us to get a new commuter car, because with a kid and a baby and 12 acres -and -and -and, we will most definitely be on a budget.

Crossovers: Mazda5, Kia Sorento and Honda CRV

First of all, I think they totally missed out by not including the Venza in their crossover category! Blasphemy. Then again, I’m completely obsessed with that vehicle. But seriously! I’ve driven a Sorento, maybe not the 2012 model, but still. It just felt so…cheap. I’m sort of shocked that the Sorento made the cut over the Venza. Especially because the Venza has the best gas mileage out of all the winners (26 mpg city, in case you were wondering). Maybe price was a deciding factor? It does start out at about $3,000 more than each of the winner. Random funny little side note, I used to work with a guy that had a Mazda5, he called it his teeny-van. {get it!? Smaller than a mini-van…he was super witty like that}

Sedan: Volkswagon Passat, Toyota Camry and Kia Optima

Woot for another Toyota! But after looking at all 3 winners, I’m shocked that sedans don’t get better gas mileage in general. They were all around 21 or 22 mpg city. Me = oblivious. We’re clearly not a “car” family. Toyota at least offers the Hybrid Camry option.

Large: Dodge Durango, Toyota Sienna and Honda Odyssey

I haven’t ridden in or driven the redesigned Durango, but I will say this, mama like. And out of the three, that’d be my top choice simply because it’s not a mini van. I loved seeing that the Sienna made the list though. Out of the three it had the best gas milage and, I mean…it’s the Swagger Wagon remember? {seriously, if you have never watched that video? Go do it right MEOW. I will wait.}

So there you have it…the best family cars according to Parents Magazine. I really wish there was some sort of breakdown/grid as to scoring across the board, you know? Why did the ones that were chosen, actually get chosen? I’d also like there to be callouts on the same topcis on each page. They mention features on all of them which is nice, but then on some they include “raves from an owner”. And and hate-HATE having to click through to see every.single.winner. I wish there was some sort of “quick reference guide” to the winners in each category.

Now I want to know…do you think the panel at Parents Magazine missed the boat on any of these categories? Do you think these are the best family friendly vehicles by category?

You can find out more about my own personal views on the Camry, Prius V and Venza here.

It hit me recently…we’re old.

Yes, I realize I’m not even 30 so the fact that I’m calling us old is sort of ridiculous, but it is true.

I’m not exactly sure when it happened. I mean, I’ve always been an “old soul”…opting for working or staying in as opposed to going out through college…things like that. But somewhere along the way, conversations have turned from traveling and nights out to washing machines and water filtration systems.

I had my very first “I feel old” feeling when I went to my first OB appointment for this pregnancy. I sat in the waiting room by myself. Checking work emails on my phone. Looking around the room I saw girls…they just seemed so…young. Girls without wedding rings. Girls with baby-daddy’s sitting next to them. Girls wearing sweatshirts sporting the name of their high school alma maters…assuming they were in fact out of high school. I took mental notes…holy shit, I’m the oldest one in this room right now. How is this even possible!? I’ve always been the youngest.

Then even more recently Andy & I were talking finances… Investments and 401Ks and IRAs and childcare costs and insurance deductibles.

You know, super fun adult type stuff.

He brought up the idea of selling his motorcycle.

I froze.

That just seems so…practical.

And permanent.

And practical.

I mean, it makes total sense…he hasn’t really ridden it in a couple of years. His back isn’t in the best of shape to be riding it anyway. It needs a new front tire. We live in Oregon, so really he only gets a few months of decent riding weather anyway. And, those months he would/should be able to ride it, he won’t be able to because he’ll have the girls. And while it does get great gas milage, the amount of money we’d have to put into it with the tire and what not wouldn’t be worth it for just a few weeks of saved gas from not driving the car.

But he loves it. And it’s not like we make payments on it. We bought it with cash just a couple of months after we got married.

But the extra money would sure be nice, especially considering we’ll have some pretty major medical bills coming up. And with the amazing deal we bought it for, we’ll almost make that up completely…even nearly 7 years later.

But I never got to ride on the back of it. And damn, does he look super hot in his riding get-up.

And I know him. Even if we could afford another one later down the road, he’d never buy one. So this would be it.

He asked me what I thought about the idea of him selling it. I told him it was his decision, because it’s his.

But what I was really thinking was… no! don’t sell it! we’re still so young! you need to have fun too!

But, it turns out we’re old. And practical.

Now, we’ve always been practical, but when did we get to be so old?

So…anyone wanna buy a motorcycle?
