The Monster’s Monster Party

I have been scheming and planning this Monster Party for months now! {Thank you Pinterest for planning my 4 year old’s birthday party!}

We’ve called Rylee “Monster” since before she could crawl. It’s a nickname that’s always fit and it’s always stuck. When we decided to throw her her very first “friends” party this year, I knew immediately I wanted it to be Monster themed.

It was nearly all DIY and my overall budget, including food was less that $100. The color scheme for the party was Blue, Green, Yellow and Red.

The Invite:

I bought some different Monster illustrations online that I used throughout all the decorations. They were “fun” monsters, not scary ones…that was key for me. All of the paper used is scrapbook paper I’ve had on hand for years…it was nice to see it go to some use!

Welcome Signs: {I mounted these to a red background and posted them on our fence posts along our driveway leading up to the house.}

Birthday Banner:

Pin the Eyeball on the Monster Game:

Based of the Monster guys I was using, my mom painted that guy for us for the game. When kids arrived, I had them color their own “monster eyeball” while they were eating snacks and getting temporary monster tattoos! {FYI: tattoos were a HUGE hit!}

The Food:

The party was at 3 PM so I kept is simple for food. I did a fruit salad, a veggie platter, had string cheese handy, chips & salsa and also made mini hot-dog crescent roll ups. To drink I had a big bowl of Capri-Suns for the kiddos and lemonade, iced tea and soda for the parents.

I made the “Monster Eyes” for guests to take with them.

The cupcakes were all mini-monsters as well. I simply frosted them and dipped them in bowls of sprinkles. For the eyeballs, I used the rest of the dipping chocolate to affix M&Ms to marshmallows for eyes. The marshmallows were a huge hit!

The Pinata:

Rylee has been requesting a pinata for her party for about as long as I’ve been planning one. She always sees them lining the aisle at the grocery store. Since that was her one request for the entire party, we figured, why not!?

I snagged these little mini bags at the dollar store, they came in 3 packs. I made different faces on all of them. This way the kiddos had something to put their pinata loot in!

I searched and searched for a monster pinata and couldn’t really find anything I liked, or anything that fit in the budget. I found this egg pinata online and figured I could DIY it into a monster. Didn’t turn out too bad, eh!?

The Party Favors:

Ry’s school has been saving me tissue boxes for the last month or so. It worked out perfectly! I decorated them all as different monsters and filled them with “Monster Bubbles” {aka: bubbles found in a 3-pack from the dollar store wrapped with a DIY label}, a “Make your own monster” dough kit {aka: play-dough tubs filled with a few different colors of play-dough, again wrapped with a DIY label} and a mini monster beach ball.

The Thank You:

Overall, I’d say the party was a success…Rylee had fun and so did the other kids. Including her, there were 8 kiddos that participated ranging from almost 2 to almost 4 1/2. It was a fun group.

If you have any questions about what I did for the party, feel free to ask! It was super fun and all really easy to put together!

And, a huge, HUGE thank you to my B, AKA Auntie Julia, for coming out and helping me get set up, keep things running smoothly, playing photographer and helping keep me sane! You’re the best, B!! xoxo

My Girl. She’s 4.

In case you missed it {not sure how you could have}…Rylee turned four years old last Friday.

I took the day off to hang out with her. Not something I’ve ever done, and not something I’ll get in the habit of, but we had a good time.

First on her agenda was to watch “all of the cartoons”…which really meant, not leaving after the “first George” like we do on typical days.

Next up was breakfast. A pancake, a scrambled egg and some yogurt.

For lunch, we headed to a local park and had a PB&J picnic lunch. And the entire park to ourselves.

Upon leaving the park, homegirl thought it’d be super fun to throw a HUGE tantrum…complete with “get your hands off of me!“… “I don’t like you” and… “you’re mean“, followed by… “I want Daddy“.

{for the record? I’ve never been happier we had the park to ourselves!}

Said huge tantrum? Followed by an epic almost 4 hour nap. So…yea…

That evening we kept it simple and had family over for lemon cupcakes {per Ry’s request} & ice cream.

Someone got a little embarrassed during the happy birthday song…

All in all though? Great Day.

And seriously? My baby is four.

*****

P.S. I’m never sure how family and/or friends feel about having photos of them end up on my blog, so I don’t typically post them, but I just love-love-love this one so much, I couldn’t resist. These are Rylee’s “extra grandparents” and mine & Andy’s “extra parents”. They’re the best. And clearly Rylee thinks so too.

4 Years. Her Interview.

Four years old…what a trip.

And what a weekend! I am so exhausted today and my feet hurt so bad from “running” all weekend I’m breaking my own “never wear Birkenstocks when it’s raining” rule and wearing them. And my feet are thanking me for it.

I took Friday off of work to spend with the birthday girl. I tried to get this interview loaded up Friday while she napped but our fabulous country-fied internet said it was going to take 7 hours to upload. {For the record? Once I got to work, it took less that 5 minutes.}

Just for the sake of reminiscing, here is last year’s interview. And her two year interview. {The 2-year? I DIE!}

Later on this week I’ll share some pics from Ry’s family party on her birthday, then I’ll write about our sibling hospital tour and wrap things up with a post about Rylee’s Monster Party! {AKA her very first “friend party”}

Happy Monday?

Rylee’s Birth Story

Today was the day 4 years ago I went into labor with our little Monster. So hard to believe four years has already passed. I still remember it like it was yesterday.

I wanted to get it all typed out before we have another birth story to get it mixed with.

You know how in the movies a pregnant lady is just going about her business, then all of a sudden, WOOSH there’s a mini-lake at her feet. Cue the crazy running around and rushing to the hospital, all while screaming at the top of her lungs that she hates her husband?

Yea, you know what I’m talking about. Then you hear from your birthing class instructor that that’s not actually how it goes at all?

Or is it?…

I waddled walked around for nearly 2 weeks 2 cm dilated and 90% effaced. At my 39 week check, which happened to be on a Thursday, Dr. B did his thing, and as he was taking off his gloves said, “well, see you this weekend!” and walked out the door.

No way I thought…this is my first kid…first kids always come late. I’m still a week from my due date. I still haven’t even had any Braxton-hicks contractions…

My workweek rounded out like any other week, but with Dr. B’s “warning” I had copied my assistant on every email I sent that day just in case. Friday night, I ended up sleeping on the couch, sitting up, most of the night because that is the only way I can seem to get comfortable.

Saturday morning Andy and I headed over to the home of some good friends to help them pack up their moving truck…well, he helped, I sat in their front yard making sure their rocking chair didn’t disappear. {What? I was clearly a big help} When they decided that their rocking chair was safe, they sent me on a lunch run for the crew.

An hour later, there we were, sitting cross-legged on the floor of their now empty living room eating sub sandwiches, strategizing how the rest of the truck would be packed when Rich, one of the homeowners, asked me to toss him a bag of chips. As I leaned forward to grab a bag of Doritos to send his way, he joked “Oh don’t lean over too far or you’re water will break!” I responded with some witty remark and threw the chips his way, laughing with the rest of the group.

I straightened up. Then cocked my head to the side…what the?…did that?…Wait a minute…

I quickly got up and made my way to the bathroom. Sure enough…my water had broke! I proceeded to yell for my husband and instructed him to go get the extra pants I had in the back of our car. We paged the doctor. He told us to head into the hospital. But before we could go to the hospital we ad to head home, grab our bag and make sure the dog had food. At that point, I still had not had a single contraction.

On our drive to the hospital we called our family and friends to let them know we were on our way to have a baby!

We checked into the hospital and made our way to the L&D room.

We walked. We played cards. We joked. We visited with family. I listened to Andy have a 5 minute debate with himself whether or not the car he saw out the window was the car he sold 2 years ago or not.

Still no contractions.

Cue the IV & petocin…or as I like to call it, the devil drug.

They upped my petocin 4 times within an hour and all of a sudden it was game on.

I was still pretty comfortable, no drugs needed. Contractions were steady, but not unbearable. We continued to visit with family. I bounced on the birthing ball while we played cards.

Then BAM! I dilated 5 cm in 45 minutes.

I had Andy kindly usher our cheering section out to the waiting room.

My contractions got stronger. My breathing became more shallow.

And then, just like in the movies, when I finally said I needed an epidural they told me it was too late! I was at 9.5 cm and about ready to push. I ended up going the route of intrithecal and I was again a happy mama.

The doctor came in just as my legs went numb. Got the bed ready and I was pushing within 5 minutes.

We had the radio on and between pushes, Dr. B was asking us trivia questions and telling us jokes.

30 minutes of pushing later (11 hours after my water broke) at 12:13 AM, I was holding our perfectly healthy 6 lb, 14 oz baby girl in my arms.

Seriously, I swear the only thing this “just-like-in-the-movies” labor & delivery lacked was me yelling obscenities at my husband.

It all seemed too easy.

But…then the drugs wore off and I could hardly walk for the next 2 weeks.

They never show you that part in the movies…

Happy almost birthday, my little monster!

Hungry Goats & Party Hats

Last week we went to a birthday part out at a local farm place. We had a great time. They have one of those “goat walk” deals where you can feed the goats. Of course we went ahead and spent a ridiculous amount of money ($1) for a tiny bit of feed. Ry had a blast.

I don’t know who would actually fill up one of those buckets…it would literally cost $100!

Rylee and Daddy petting the goats.

Well, that one kind of freaked her out!

Trying out the goat feeder pully-system thingie. It was a hit.

A view of the goat walk.
Lots of goats lined up for some food. Rylee only liked the “little ones”.

She was totally digging her birthday hat. She still wears it for breakfast each morning.
And NO this does not mean we are getting, or even want, any goats. So don’t even suggest it…Mom.
