About katherine

This is where the bio info goes

What a trip.

So Friday was my brother (and sister’s) high school graduation.

I haven’t been back in that school since my own high school graduation.

{side note, I totally left high school bitter and jaded and now I wonder how many friendships were lost/how much time was wasted over the years because of simple insecurities.}

Anywho.

It was fun to look through the program and recognize staff members’ names that were still around. Some even spanned the years of my oldest sister all the way down to my brother. {see below}

Turns out, high school gym bleachers are not very 33-week pregnant butt friendly. Because wow. After sitting there for what seemed like eternity about an hour and a half, my hips? They were hurtin’. My butt cheeks? Were numb.

While it was cool to see my brother and sister walk across the stage to receive their diplomas, hands down the very best part of the night was seeing a severely handicapped student go across the stage in his wheelchair, receive his diploma and then receive a standing ovation from the rest of the graduating class.

{Almost makes me think there’s hope for kids these days.}

{And yes, I cried.}

Rylee was super-duper proud of her uncle. To the point of tears. No joke. When she saw him process in? She started crying and couldn’t stop smiling. It was the sweetest thing ever.

I love how much she loves him.

Whoa kid…slow down!

This is one of the many teachers that had all 4 of us siblings over the course of about 15 years. See what I mean? Total trip.

{And yes, apparently there’s a wolverine eating my ass.}

Lessons in Humility from my 4 year old…

Oh the things toddlers say…

{I do still have a toddler, right? I’m not quite ready to switch to full-on KID status yet.}

Sometimes they make us shake our heads, other times they just make us laugh.

And then there’s other times, where what comes out of their mouths give you a healthy dose of humility and knock you down a couple of notches.

Lately, there’s been a lot of laughs, with a few bits of humility thrown in there for good measure.

Like, just this morning, Rylee and I were talking about something and I wasn’t getting what she was asking about and she wasn’t getting what I was trying to answer so there was a pause. A long pause. And she looked at me, put her hand up to her mouth and whispered “Awkwarrrd…”

A few weeks ago our rental house was having Dish Network out to do some work. They pulled up to the house just as Ry & I were backing into our driveway. As I was getting her out of the car, they were working on turning around their van to get it all situated for whatever work they were doing. Well, as they were turning around, they were blocking our front gate and Rylee of course takes notice, then, in her not-particularly-quiet-toddler voice says, “Are you kidding me!? They’re parking in front of our gate!?!?”

{I quickly ushered the sweet little girl into the house and shut the door!}

We eat dinner as a family nearly every single night. We talk about lots of different things. Some nights are blissful. Other nights are a struggle. But such is life with a toddler/kid, right!? Anyway, one night we were sitting there eating and Rylee very sweetly turns to Andy and says, “Daddy?” Andy answers “Yes Rylee?” To which she says “Daddy, I love you.”

{Cue the awww…how sweet}

Then she turns to me and in the same sweet tone says, “Mommy?” And I answer “Yes, Rylee?” To which she says “Will you cut my meat?”

O_o

Last week while at my mom’s house for the day, Ry, my mom and my mom’s friend were outside enjoying the sun. My mom’s friend went to light up a cigarette.

Rylee looked at her and said, “Ummm, my mommy & daddy don’t want me smelling smoke. So you need to move please.”

My mom’s friend looked at Ry and said, “Oh, ok then” and went around to the other side of the house.

{When my mom relayed that story to me I about crapped my pants…both out of embarrassment and complete pride.}

The other night we went out to dinner with some family that was visiting from out of town. We went to a favorite local Mexican restaurant. I always try something different there. This time, I ordered a burrito and it.was.massive. I managed to eat about 3/4 of the burrito before I slowed down, put my fork down and said “Ooph, I’m so full.” A few minutes later, I picked up my fork and started eating again…not because I was hungry, but because it was sitting in front of me. After a few more bites, I made another reference to being full. Rylee looks at me and says “If you’re full, then why are you still eating!?”

Touche, kid. Touche.

Happy Friday, folks!

Tip from Kat: Don’t Do This

So, I have this cousin.

She, alongside her Marine husband battled infertility for 6 {yes SIX!} years.

After the many ups and downs and doctor appointments and treatments, they find out she’s expecting!

Only then finds out that her husband, less than a year after returning from his last deployment and about a month before their miracle baby is due, is being deployed again for the umpteenth time {seriously, I’ve lost count how many times he’s been deployed}.

He will spend the first 5 months of their miracle baby’s life overseas somewhere fighting for our country.

And she will spend the first 5 months of their miracle baby’s life going it alone.

Anyway, here’s my tip for you.

Do not, I repeat, DO NOT, sit in your car in the grocery store of the parking lot and watch the video your cousin posted on facebook of  her Marine husband returning home from deployment and meeting their 5 month old baby for the first time.

Because you will bawl your eyes out.

And it will be a loud, ugly cry.

And tears will fall on your 33 week belly and soak your shirt.

And snot will run down nose.

And you won’t be able to find a tissue.

And you’ll still have to go into the grocery store to get those 3 things you absolutely have to have for the dinner your are hosting that night.

Then people will look at you funny for walking through the grocery store with your sunglasses on.

Seriously, just don’t do it.

You’re welcome.

Side note? I am in awe of the strength some people have. Military families. Families struggling with infertility. I have so, SO much respect and admiration for every single one of you.

Especially you, my amazing cousin.

Clicking for Good

Have you heard about Toyota’s 100 cars for good?

Basically, Toyota’s 100 Cars for Good program is this: “a Facebook-enabled philanthropy initiative whereby Toyota will give away 100 cars in 100 days to 100 eligible nonprofit charitable organizations.Each day for 100 days, online voters will choose which of five nonprofits will take home a new set of wheels. The organization who receives the most votes at the end of the day takes home a brand new Toyota.”

You guys? This is a seriously awesome program.

The voting started back in May {I know, I’m a little behind the times here, but better late than never, right?}. Every single day a nonprofit is winning a FREE brand.new.car. And while all 500 finalists can’t win a new car, According to Toyota,  “To help participating nonprofits with their 100 Cars for Good campaigns – and to help them develop lasting digital marketing and social media skills that are critical to today’s nonprofits – Toyota has provided each finalist with a toolkit that includes a digital video camera, training materials  and free online advertising credits. The company is providing social media training support online to the finalists as well.

I love that Toyota is empowering these groups to help themselves grow.

21 days in, people are loving on animal rescue and youth-based programs. Winners have been from all over then country…Oregon {woot!}, California and Idaho all the way to Florida, Washington DC and New York.

Please, take a minute {actually less than a minute!} to watch this short video Toyota put out about the 100 Cars for Good program. {And I DARE you not to relate to at least one thing you’ve wasted clicks on! Like the facebook sink hole…am I right!?}

How many times are you on Facebook every day? Voting just takes a second…and it really does make a difference.

To vote and learn more: https://apps.facebook.com/carsforgood/

Now…go!…click for good!

Disclosure: I was selected for participation in the TWIN community through a program with Clever Girls Collective. I did not receive any compensation for writing this post, or payment in exchange for participating. The opinions expressed herein are mine, and do not reflect the views of the Toyota.

Banana-Fanna-Bo-Nanna

Ahh yes…the name game.

That seems to be the question/topic on everyone’s mind lately!

I suppose that may be because we’re less than 60 days from go-time with this little girl steadily growing in my belly and we have yet to decide on a name.

It’s killing me it’s taken us this long to figure out/decide on a name for this girl. Mostly because with Rylee? Well, we knew that if we had a girl, her name would be Rylee from the time before we were ever even engaged. So, the moment that ultrasound tech told us we were having a girl {well, from the moment I stopped sobbing} we knew we had a Rylee.

Fast forward 4 years. Anytime someone asks the question “So you have a name picked out?” instead of going into a big long explanation of how we don’t, but we have some front runners, blah blah blah, the easiest answer is to just say “nope…she may never!”

We’ve been kicking around names from the day we found out we were having a girl. There’ve been some HELL NOs and some decent potential candidates.

But here’s the thing about “potential candidates”…the second I tell you of the name(s) we’re thinking of, it’s like opening up this big can of worms that almost entitles you to giving us your opinions on said names. And to be totally honest, I don’t care if that name reminds you of a dog’s name or that you knew a girl with that name back in the 7th grade and she was a total yitch.

So, for the most part, we’ve kept our potentials to ourselves.

We’ve gone back and forth on a couple of names. One Andy LOVES, that I actually love too but can’t completely bring myself to say with 100% certainty that THAT should be our baby girl’s name. And another that would be the middle name for Andy’s top pick, that would also be a good first name option.

Back in April, I thought for sure we had the first name decided. It came up on a road trip I threw it out there and Andy said, well why don’t we just have that name be her first name then? SURE! I thought, holy crap that was easy. Then we had to come up with a middle name. Turns out that was just as challenging. Then a few weeks later, Andy tells me “Well… I really still like ____ the best.”

Aaaand…back to square one.

CUE THE HEAD EXPLOSION!

So. That’s where we’re at.

Still no final decision on a name.

We have the two “front runners” but I’m still always throwing new names out there to see if any stick.

Less than 60 days until go-time.

And back to the exploding head bit.
