World’s Okayest Blogger

So this one time at band camp I made this crazy commitment to write every single day for an entire month. And then, even on the days that I wanted to quit, figuring no one would even care anyway, I powered through and posted every.single.day. … right up through the 29th. On the 30th, the very last day of the month, I was visiting my sister, where we began to talk about my crazy commitment and I was proud to say I’d stuck with it. Then? I forgot to post that day. And THEN almost three more weeks went by before I even posted again.

Yep…that happened.

I even had my last post of the month all planned out in my head but well…yea..Long story short, quite a while ago I came to the conclusion that I’m the “World’s Okayest Mom“. Over the last month and a half, I’ve come to the conclusion that I can add “World’s Okayest Blogger” to my trophy wall.

Don’t believe me? Check out my credentials:

Photos: Sure, most posts have them…but anymore, 90% of the time they are recycled from my instagram account.

Posting: Writing thoughtful, well composed posts takes time…a lot of time. I honestly wonder how most working-mom-bloggers do it. Maybe they just don’t sleep? I value sleep. And as much as I can possibly get.

Content: I have all sorts of content ideas…I wear some pretty cute outfits,  cook some pretty awesome dinners, have two cute/funny kids and not to mention all sorts of DIY projects going on around the house/property. I’d venture to guess that maybe, maybe 50% of those things will actually make it to the blog.

Other: I’m sure there’s more, but I can’t think of them right now…I think that’s a credential in and of itself.

I actually really enjoyed the NaBloPoMo challenge. I’d like to say it ignited a wildfire for blogging, though I’m pretty sure based on my 3 week hiatus you’d call me a liar. But. I can honestly say it did reignite a spark. I always have the best of intentions with blogging but life outside of my computer tends to take priority.

My goal is to be better…but isn’t it always? Sometimes I think I sound like a broken record with this. Hey, add that to my list of credentials!

Sometimes the hardest part about coming back after a blog break is figuring out where to start.

So if you’re still around, hi. Thanks. I’ve missed you.

Let’s Talk Christmas {Cards} – A Minted.com Review

When it comes to all things Christmas in my house, I have the following rules:

  1. No Christmas until after Thanksgiving.

Simple rule, right? Now that it’s officially after Thanksgiving I can let you in on a teeny, tiny secret…I broke my own rule. I started looking at Christmas card designs last week. I couldn’t help myself. And to be honest, I’m only a little bit ashamed because when Minted.com contacts you and asks if you’d be interested in reviewing their site, you say yes. YES! Right then and there. Then you start browsing all of their awesome holiday cards.

If you’re not familiar with Minted, they are an online stationery store powered by a global community of designers. I’ve been lusting over various cards on their website for quite some time and their 2013 Holiday Card Collection does not disappoint.

When it comes to Christmas Cards I have 2 rules {I know I have so many rules}:

  1. Must say Merry Christmas. {what can I say, I’m a traditionalist}
  2. Must contain at least one photo. {I’m apparently also a narcissist}

Here’s what I love about what Minted.com has to offer:

  • So many to choose from!– I’m not going to tell you how long I looked at all of card designs…1. because I lost track of time and 2. because I may or may not have been at work. At one point I had over 15 tabs open as possible keepers. I’ve since narrowed it down to three, but I never even looked at all of the options. They also have a ton of non-photo holiday cards to choose from…you know, if you’re not the narcissistic type.
  • Truly customizable– From the accent colors and scalloped edges to the paper weight and message options, you can do just about anything you want with each card design. Want to match the accent colors to the clothes you’re wearing in your photo? Totally doable. Want to make it a folded card to include your annual holiday letter inside? Done. You can even move elements around within the design.
  • Easy to use– You can upload multiple photos at once, you can edit them, you can customize every step of the way, previewing every change you make. It’s very straight forward. You can even upload the addresses of your recipients and they will address them for you!

And because I know you’re all nosey like me curious…here’s the three I’ve narrowed it down to…

So which one did I decide to go with? Well wouldn’t you like to know. I guess you’ll just have to wait until you get yours in the mail to find out!

If you’re still in the market for some holiday cards…go check out the Minted.com selection!

Disclosure: Minted.com provided me a credit in exchange for my honest review of their website and holiday cards. All opinions are 100% my own.

Yup. Thankful.

Holy crap just realized I almost missed posting today! I guess I got too caught up in sleeping in until 8 am, not showering until 11 am, cooking a perfectly timed and quite delicious thanksgiving spread ready at 5:30 PM sharp, then eating dessert and playing board games for the next two hours.

Today was unlike any other thanksgiving we have ever had we went exactly zero places and didn’t even have anyone over until after 5:00.

I think every year since I’ve been out of the house I’ve remarked how “that didn’t even feel like thanksgiving”. I don’t think anything will ever feel like thanksgivings from my childhood…maybe because I’m the one doing the cooking, maybe because of family dynamics, or maybe because it seems like we have a different plan every year. There’s no real tradition yet. Now that the day is done I can say that’s exactly how I felt again this year. But..There were people I love. Lots of good food. And plenty of laughter. That’s definitely something to be thankful for.

Short Work Weeks

I swear every time there is a short work week due to a holiday is the slowest, yet busiest week ever. Like, I’ve packed so much work crap into these last three days I feel like it should be Friday.

I’m literally the last person left in the office. And I’m the one quitting in a month.

Does.Not.Compute.

Not to mention I didn’t even get everything done that I needed to so I’ll be working on a few projects from home on Friday. Stupid deadlines and stupid work ethic.

So much for my long weekend. Womp.

Any other working women out there feel the same way about short work weeks?

I however, am fully planning on enjoying my day tomorrow. We’re not going anywhere. We aren’t even eating until 5:30 at night. It should be a pretty quiet, leisurely day home with my little family and I cannot wait.

I’ll be back tomorrow because NaBloPoMo and dammit I’ve made it this far, I’m not about to quit now!

Kindergarten. The first Quarter.

Kindergarten is a trip you guys. From the first day at drop-off, to sitting in those tiny little chairs at parent-teacher conferences.

I was excited for conferences. I knew Rylee was doing well, but I was looking forward to hearing about her progress. So excuse my while I brag about my kid for a few minutes.

They do a questionnaire/worksheet the  first week week of school to gauge where the kids are at. Then they follow it up at the end of the first quarter to track progress, and again a few other times throughout the year. In just over two months, her progress is pretty amazing.

While she knew all of her letters to begin with, her handwriting has come a long, long way. Her teacher told us last night that she had recently been bumped up to the highest reading group…skipping one full level. It’s a little bit of a stretch for her right now, but she seems to be up for the challenge. Just recently at home, I’ve noticed that things with reading seem to be clicking a lot more, so that all makes a bit more sense now. She is writing words and sounding them out on her own. According to the new Common Core standards, she meets or exceeds all of the benchmarks.

Her math is probably the most impressive. Since they only have a 2.5 hour day, they don’t focus on it a ton in class, but her teacher sends home math-based challenge homework with her almost weekly. While there are some pretty advanced concepts, like “which digit is in the tens column”, greater than/less than and even word problems, we work through them with her and she picks it up pretty well. She can count by 2’s to 16, by 5’s to 105 and by 10’s to 100. She’s trying to figure out how to tell time, even though they’re not teaching that right now. She is exceeding the benchmarks on all of the levels. She really seems to love math.

As far as citizenship goes, she is is a joy to have in class. She comes to class each day with a smile on her face and ready for the day. She is compassionate. She knows when to raise her hand. She follows the rules. She has fun and socializes when it’s appropriate, but she focuses on work when it’s quiet time.

Right at the end of the first quarter, they did a little awards ceremony for her class. She came home with 3 out of 3 awards given that day…perfect attendance, outstanding citizenship and math excellence.

Overall, Rylee loves kindergarten. Loves. And it really shows.

She happily climbs onto the giant bus each morning.

She works really hard. I am seriously just so proud of this girl. I love her love of learning and I hope it’s something that continues for a long, long time.

My hear swelled three sizes during that parent-teacher conference {ok, maybe my head a little bit too}. Andy & I actually high-fived eachother once we were in the parking lot. Sometimes we get flack for how “strict” we are with our girls and it’s nice to know that when we’re not around the foundation we’ve worked really hard to set is sticking with her.

Yup. Kindergarten. I kinda wish we could freeze time.
