Do Not Disturb

Between my last day at Cosmos and my first day at my new job I had 12 days off…well, 11 if you count the one day I went back into Cosmos to help with “orientation” for my replacement. A few things to note about my time off…a) I’ve never taken time off over the holidays. b) I’ve never taken time off between jobs…last time I left a job for another my last day was on a Friday and I started the new gig on Monday. c) Andy & I have never had more than a long weekend off together, not counting my maternity leave. and finally d) I’ve never had that much time off. Period.

I’m not going to lie, I was really looking forward to the time off. Not only because I wasn’t going to be stressing about work or stressing about the holidays, but because I was truly, genuinely excited to spend so much time with my family at home.

There were many times over the course of those 12 days where I found myself leaving my phone in another room…sometimes hours at a time. Not caring one bit that I was disconnected. At times, I even put my phone on Do Not Disturb. It was so amazing to step away, completely guilt free.

It ended up working out where a few days over my time off the girls either went to daycare or spent a day with their grandparents. We took that time together to work on projects around the house and property. We made major progress on our chicken coop. When some people heard that’s how we were going to spend our time as “just us” they joked about how boring and practical we were. In reality, I couldn’t think of anything I’d rather do. Before we had kids, we used to work on projects, both big and small, all the time. We would spend hours outside. It’s something we loved to do and often talk about how we look forward to being able to do those things again when the girls are older and a bit more independent.

I could feel the stress melting away. I could feel myself relaxing. We spent time as a family. We spent time with friends. We laughed a lot. We prepped for the holidays. We knocked a bunch of projects off of the ever-growing to-do list. We organized. We purged. We cleaned. Together.

I ended my vacation with a clean and organized house, completely revived and ready to take on a new year and a new adventure.

My new job comes with 5 weeks of paid time off to use over the next year. I’m already looking forward to using some of that time just like I did.

Christmas Magic

The moment of Christmas Magic officially hit me this year. It came at about 10:30 PM on Christmas Eve as I flopped myself down on the couch after the last gift was assembled…completely exhausted. I pictured the look on Rylee’s face when she saw the pile of gifts under {and around} the tree. How she might react when she realized Santa had come. How excited she would be when she opened her “big gift” from Santa. I imagined how much Reese would enjoy playing with her gifts.

I thought back to all my years of childhood and how much I loved Christmas growing up. Right then is when it hit me.

My parents created this magic for me every year. And not just for me, but for my 3 siblings as well. I never once thought about it before that moment. But right then, I could picture my parents staying up late on Christmas Eve…filling our stockings, pulling gifts from hiding places, finishing last minute wrapping.

Now here I am, getting to create the Magic of Christmas for my kids.

Parenthood is truly a trip. And you better believe the very next day I made sure to thank my parents for all of their hard work over the years keeping that Christmas Magic alive.

*****

We scaled back our typical Christmas decorations this year because of a certain mischievous almost one and a half year old. I put up the Advent calendar for the second year in a row, though Rylee didn’t seem particularly interested in too many of the activities. I didn’t push it. We didn’t have our annual “Sisters Baking Night”. When it came to opening gifts, Reese wanted nothing to do with any of it. I think it was sensory overload for her.

Rylee, on the other hand is right at the perfect age for the Magic of Christmas. This is the first year she truly got it. She colored Santa a picture and rolled it up in her stocking for him to find. She left Rudolf and the other reindeer celery {we were out of carrots} and was thrilled to see that they were gone when she woke up Christmas morning. When she visited Santa earlier in November, she told Santa she wanted an iPod touch. At first, I thought there was no way in hell Santa would bring her one of those…then somewhere along the way, Santa had a change of heart and ended up reformatting my old iPhone; loading it with {free} games and some of her favorite music. Santa even left a little note typed out to read when she turned it on. We hardly took any photos, and we didn’t take any video but her reaction to all that is something I will remember forever.

Christmas this year was exactly what I was expecting, yet nothing like what I was expecting all at the same time.

Overall? The magic was there, and it was perfect.

Our Nativity had a couple extras this year…apparently there was no room at the Inn for Mickey or Minnie either.

10 Minute Update-A new Year

This last week has been kind of a whirlwind. Oh who am I kidding, life in gerenal is a whirlwind anymore. However, with back-to-school and a new job, this week has been a special version of said whirlwind.

Ok, I’ll stop using that word now.

I just finished munching some Oreo cookies dipped in peanut butter and have a few minutes before I need to get back to work so I thought I’d tap out a quick update.

Reese has been doing this super fun “I’m going to wake up and start scream-cring anywhere between 3:45 & 5:00 AM and not want to go back to sleep”thing over the last couple of weeks. It’s been rough, but now that Andy is back at work and we all have to get up and going at a decent time, we’re both over it. Like, really over it.  So, we’re working on breaking her of that habit. Fun times. Er, more like tired times.

Rylee did not want to go back to school. I mean, she’s not refusing kicking and screaming, she’s just made numerous “I’d rather stay home and spend time with my family” comments. I’m sure once she’s back in the swing of school she’ll be fine. She’s just about ready to lose her second tooth. I ask her every morning if it’s still there or if she swallowed it while she was sleeping. She only thinks that’s funny about half the time. She’s still digging gymnastics. We just signed her up for another 8 week session.  She told me yesterday that she wants to join Girl Scouts…now it looks like Ihave some research to do.

I’ve officially been at my new job for a week. It’s pretty much as awesome as everyone had said it is.  I’m seriously missing all my old work family and shifting focus from doing all of the things to just a couple different things is definitely an adjustment but…wow. I’m excited about where things can go here. I’m in the process of adjusting to a new-ish schedule. I don’t technically need to be in the office until 8:30 in the morning, but I get in anywhere between 8 & 8:30. That also means I only “get” a 30 minute lunch so I’m trying to work blogging into my new schedule. I’ll get there. Or not. Who knows. Either way, I’ve got things I want to shore from my time off between jobs, but at this point, maybe I won’t? Meh.

10 minutes is officially up. Time for my next training.

Here’s a few pics of some recent things…

Happy Friday Eve.

What a year.

As I round out my vacation I’ve found myself with a few hours at home alone with the quiet. Instead of ticking away at my to-do list, I decided to open up my laptop for only the second time in about two weeks. This vacation has been a much-needed restart, but I’ll come back to that another time.

While I was on the ball enough to get Christmas Cards send out in a timely manner, I did not have the time or wherewithal to get a “Christmas Letter written, printed, folded and stuffed along with said card. That doesn’t mean that our year wasn’t worth reviewing.

The year started out as most new years do… JanuaryFebruary and March came and went with nothing  major to report.

In April, I packed my bags and headed to Arizona for a long weekend with three of my best friends. We spent the weekend do absolutely nothing and it was one of the best weekends I have ever had. When I got home, another one of my best friends, my sister, moved back to Oregon. I has been so nice to have her back.

Rylee turned the big FIVE in May and we celebrated by throwing a rocking Angry Birds party. For Memorial Day weekend we packed up the Suburban and headed to Eastern Oregon to go camping with a group of friends, we had a great time despite the freezing overnight temperatures and are looking forward to this new tradition.

June brought the end of another school year for Andy and Rylee’s pre-school graduation. Andy headed to New York City to stand as Best Man while his best friend married an amazing woman.

July was a BIG month for our family. We packed our bags and headed to Hawaii for a week to see my sister get married…it was both the girls’ first plane ride and the first vacation for Andy and I since our Honeymoon. We jam packed as much as we could into that week while working around napping and feeding schedules. A couple of weeks after our return home, Reesie Bug turned one…that had to be one of the fastest years ever.

Overall, August was relatively quiet, but September more than made up for it. Andy started his (I think) tenth year of teaching and Rylee started Kindergarten! In October Rylee lost her first tooth and we discovered that Reese loves all things Halloween.

In November I challenged myself to post every single day of the month and did just that…right up until the very last day. November also brought a big decision for me…after 7 years with the same management team I accepted a job with another company and turned in my notice committing to staying through the end of the year.

With preparations for leaving Cosmos, preparations for Christmas and now preparations for a new job, we rounded out the year with a crazier than normal December. For the first time ever, I was able to take an extended amount of time off over the holiday and spend almost all of Christmas break at home with Andy and the girls. It has been so nice to relax, sleep in, sip hot coffee and tackle a lot of projects around the house. We will be kicking off 2014 with a very organized home.

We found out on Christmas morning that we will be welcoming a new member into the family in 2014! No, I’m not pregnant…my sister got engaged!

I may not have recorded all of the year’s major moments on the blog like I have in years past, but I think it’s safe to say that this year was one of our family’s best years yet!

I also think it’s safe to say that with a new job, turning 30 and a wedding in the family, 2014 will not disappoint.

And now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve only got about 13 hours left of 2013 and a bunch of things left on my to-do list. I hope everyone has a very safe and happy new year’s eve.

From my family to yours, cheers to 2013 and here’s to an amazing 2014!

Family Traditions

I’ve shared here before about how I grew up hunting with my dad. And how it’s a passion I’m hoping to pass down to my girls.

The actual hunting is only a part of it. We don’t hunt for the trophies, we hunt for the meat…as a way to provide for our family. Once the deer is down, the real work begins. Growing up, every year dad got a deer it was the same thing…he’d bring home the deer and hang it up in the shop to cure. A few days later, we’d clear off the dining room table, set up an assembly line and cut and wrap the deer.

When I was Rylee’s age, I was in charge of the tape. I always so bummed all I got to do was the tape. If I was lucky I’d get to help label too. As I got older, and my sisters moved away, I was promoted to wrapper. When Andy came into the picture, he joined in our assembly line. Once we had kids, one of us would be on hand for cut & wrap and the other on kid duty. Sometimes my dad’s siblings will be there to help out. This year, my sister’s boyfriend got to join in the fun while my sister…uhhh…supervised. Our assembly line has changed many times over the years but one thing remains the same: it’s time we all come together and share in a family tradition that I have so many fond memories of.

This year I really looked forward to gathering around the table. This is the first year Rylee has been old enough to participate. After we all ate dinner, Andy took Reese home for bed and Ry stayed with me to help. She was excited and I was excited that she was excited.

We all took our places around the table. She asked Grandad questions about what he was doing.

20131115-154120.jpgShe was the official taper and labeler. She took great care in taping in just the right spot after Aunt Kathy wrapped up a cut.

Then she took even greater care in labeling each pack. Making sure to write “By Rylee” in case anyone wondered who wrote on it.

We all had our jobs. We shared laughs. We planted the seed of another beloved family tradition. There are so many things in life that now looking back I didn’t truly appreciate at the time. It’s amazing how appreciation and perspective changes and you get older. I hope that it’s something that when she’s an adult she looks back on as fondly as I do.
