Fashion Police Friday – June 11

Ok, so technically, this is not a true “fashion police” post for 2 reasons. 1. How cute is that outfit she’s in! (They can’t all be bad, right?) and 2. The story behind the reason she is wearing it today.

Today is Andy’s very last day out at his school for the summer. The kids were done yesterday and today is just a grading/clean-up day. Normally, on the Fridays that Andy has to work (4 day school week!), Auntie Julia chips in and spends the day with the Monster. Well, today, she has to go to Portland for her final wedding dress fitting before her wedding (t-minus 15 days!) so she can’t watch Ry. Andy decided he’d take Ry to work with him. Fast forward a couple of days past that discussion…I was showing Andy Ry’s new outfit that Auntie Julia gave her for her birthday and I remarked about how stinkin’ cute it was and how cute Ry will look in it and Andy looks at the outfit and looks at me and says, “Can she wear that when she goes to work with me this Friday?” Sweet, no?

On another, non-fashion-police-but-still-blog-worthy note, I have a soar throat. And? Rylee has decided to drop the “a” off Mama and now she just calls me Mom. MOM! Talk about a punch to the gut…forget the fact she’s talking. Forget about the big-girl bed. Forget about the hair long enough for piggies…this little kid is SO not a baby any more. Maybe I have a soar throat because I am so sick over it.

Happy Summer!

Well, I guess considering the weather around here these days you wouldn’t know it, but in my house it is officially Summer break!

Summer break is more than just a time for kids and teachers to regenerate. It’s a really great time for the spouses of teachers to regenerate too. Well, at least for me. We are typically pretty laid back in our house, but during the Summer, we really get to kick back. With 12.5 acres to take care of, there is always something that needs to get taken care of, but during Summer, it’s different. It’s not work. It’s spending time outside and any time outside is fun! With Andy home all Summer, he not only has a chance to spend a whole bunch of time with Rylee, he also has a lot of time to get stuff done around the house. I come home from work and dishes are done, laundry is folded and sometimes, even dinner is started. This leaves the whole rest of the evening to spend time as a family. Needless to say, I look forward to Summer break just as much as Andy!

Throughout the school year, Andy and I spend a lot of time sharing plans, goals, aspirations and dreams for the Summer. On the docket for this Summer? All kinds of things like…

  • Chainsaw carving contest over Father’s Day
  • Julia & Spencer’s wedding
  • Ry’s first trip to the Oregon Coast Aquarium/play at the beach
  • 4th of July party at the Clark’s…I think we’ll even let Ry stay up an watch the fireworks
  • Ry’s first camping trip! (hopefully more than just one)
  • Ry’s first fishing trip
  • Celebrating our 5th wedding anniversary
  • Hikes-short and easy ones
  • Play outside as much as possible
  • Swim at Mammy’s house
  • BBQ as much as possible…I love to grill!
  • And, we musn’t forget about…POTTY TRAINING!!

The last day of school was today. I posted last night about a really nice note Andy got from a student. Tonight, he came home with an entire case of Pepsi and a very fun looking gift bag. This time it was from parents. When I mentioned how cute I thought the bag was, Andy said I’d love what was inside. Looking inside, I found 4 solar lights for outside walkway illumination. SO CUTE! And they will look great in the front of our house. Then, I looked at the card. And I almost cried yet again.

Here’s what it said: “Thanks you for lighting the path for my kids. They now for once enjoy coming to school. We think of you often and you will never be forgotten.”

How cute is that gift bag, right!? Oh, and yes, for those of you who read my blog that have been to my house, I totally took that photo in the bathroom…I wanted a bright background. Haha.

I hope everyone enjoys Summer as much as we do! What kind of fun stuff do you have planned?

Not just a Super Dad!

Nearing the end of the school year (tomorrow!!), Andy’s students are just as restless as he is. Most of the kids are so ready to get out of school that they are complete jerk-holes the whole last week.

Andy works really hard to be a good teacher. If you don’t think so, just remember that we spent our Memorial Day out at his school to do some prep work for his next day. He’s got a good rapport with his students, parents and coworkers. Teaching is a pretty thankless job all the way around. Teachers work hard. They’ve got to be on the ball all.day.long. all while still teaching and encouraging kids. Wow. There is no way I could do what he does. I tell him that all the time and I really, really mean it. I tell him I am proud of him for what he does. I tell him I admire him for his patience. Maybe because I tell him these things, they sometimes fall on deaf ears. Something happened the other day, and he heard what I’ve been saying all along LOUD AND CLEAR.

A student brought him a 12 pack of Pepsi (all his students know how much he loves it) and a card. Here’s what the card said:
“Thank you Mr. Rice for pushing me to be my best even in my laziest moments you’re the best teacher that I have had. You always encourage me and give me examples. You always put it into terms that I will understand. Thank you for everything!”

I almost started crying right then and there. What an amazing man he is.

Crunchatized

Isn’t the tag line for Cap’n Crunch “Crunchatize Me, Cap’n”? If not, then that is about the dumbest post title. Ever.
Anyway, it seems funny to me that my 2-year old loves cold cereal. The obsession came when she saw me eating cereal with my straw bowl and wanted to try it. She’s been hooked ever since. She had some cereal the other morning and I wasn’t paying much attention. But, when she said she was all done and I looked down, I noticed she had ate ALL the crunch berries out of her cereal. What a little monster!
