Happy Birthaversary.

I don’t normally like calling attention to my birthday, but this was too good to not to post. Ry started the morning off telling me “happy cake” and by the end of the night, she was full on singing me happy birthday. It was so, so sweet.

I told Andy the only thing I wanted for my birthday was a piece of Dairy Queen ice cream cake. I’ve had a DQ cake on my birthday for nearly as long as I can remember. Really, even when I was managing the Cold Stone stores {Shh…don’t tell my old boss!} What can I say, I love them. Instead of just a slice, Andy came home with an entire cake…SCORE! He was very sweet and insisted on putting candles on and singing me happy birthday. He even asked me to get the camera out so he could take pictures. It was just the three of us and it was perfect.

(Please excuse the monster’s finger smooge over the camera lens.)
That is birthday perfection, right there!

On another note, today is mine and Andy’s anniverary. Our 5th. It’s hard to believe it’s already been 5 years. The time has flown by. We don’t really have anything super special planned. I think we will have dinner tonight then go hike Skinner’s Butte. I was thinking maybe instead of going out to dinner, we may even pack a picnic at eat it at the park at the base of the butte. Hopefully we’ll get some pretty pictures from up there.

I’m going to go Bat Shit CRAZY!

You’ve heard that joke “no dating till you’re 30” right?

Well, it’s official…I am not going to let my daughter leave the house, let alone date, until she’s thirty! Have you guys seen the stuff that’s going on in the world today for tween/teen girls? It’s scaring the crap out of me!

Just this week alone I have seen/heard about 5 different stories/articles that make me want to send Rylee to a convent before she turns 5. {That’s no big deal right? Back in the day, girls were becoming nuns at very young ages. A lot of them even became saints.} Allow me to explain…

1. This all started Sunday morning as I was sitting in my kitchen looking through the Sunday ads and I came across this Sears ad…
Really Sears? This is how you are marketing to “Juniors”? I’m guessing it’s all 20% OFF because there seems to be 20% less clothing that when I was a teenager. I’m sorry, but when Rylee is old enough to be shopping in the “Juniors” section, she will NOT be wearing shirts like that. No way. No how. Last time I had checked, Sears was the place to go and buy Craftsman tools, appliances and lawnmowers and where my grandma bought bed linens and towels. Sears was not a place to go buy provocative clothing for teenagers.
2. I hear from another blogging mama about how she has a friend who’s 9 year old daughter went in to her doctor for a routine check-up and was given a pregnancy test because apparently there have been recent instances where 9 year olds have been pregnant. My jaw about hit.the.ground. Are you kidding me!? Pregnant 9 year olds? Oh yes, it’s true. In February a 9 year old in China gave birth to a baby boy. While I’m sure she did not get pregnant on her own free will, the alternative is certainly not any better. And if there was no foul play afoot here…holy moly. Kids are learning about sex younger and younger. I remember in the 5th grade how boys went to one class and girls went to another and we were shown a slide show on the changes bodies go through, then given a free sample of deodorant. Gone are those days, eh?
3. Then I happened to see this article about how “XOXO makes teens look like they want more than hugs and kisses.” At this point, my blood was boiling. As a woman and mom in the marketing/advertising industry I am simultaneously disturbed and disgusted. The author of the article goes on to say how she got in contact with the ad firm that developed the campaign for XOXO and quotes the Senior Director of the firm as saying “XOXO is the brand every boyfriend wants their girlfriend to wear” {I’m sure it is} The author was told that the target demographic for this clothing is 21 to 28 year olds. So, with a little quick math (impressive, I know) I figured out that age demographic is…me. Last time I checked I don’t know any 21 to 28 year olds that dress like that or shop in the Juniors section at department stores. Maybe it’s because I’m not into the party scene. Maybe it’s because I’m a mom. Maybe it’s because I have a professional career. Who knows. What I do know is that XOXO’s “back to school” campaign is targeting a much younger wider age range. I think they know it too.
4. I happened to read a blog post from another fellow mom-blogger about how she was buying her daughter a training bra at Kohl’s and right next to the training bras were barely-there skivvies in sizes built for wee ones. Now, I remember my first pair of thong underwear…I was a Freshman in high school if I remember correctly. But there was nothing “sexy” about them. There were for utility purposes only, ie: no panty lines under my homecoming dress. The chonies this lady saw right next to the training bras built for 10-12 year olds were lacy and skimpy and ambroidered and be-jeweled and most definitely not for utility purposes only. These things sound like the undies I received as gifts at my bachelorette party. Certainly nothing I want my tween-age daughter wearing!
5. This last one sent me over the edge. I subscribe to some parenting e-mails and I received one that had a link to this article about a dance studio in Canada that offers pole dancing classes to…kids. As young as 5 years old. Say WHAT!?  The owner of the studio is actually quoted in the article saying how much kids love the pole and it’s hard to get them off of it because they are such “naturals”.  Like the author says in her article…even if the kids themselves don’t associate the pole with something sexual, I really don’t want to get the call from my kid’s teacher telling me that during recess, she was showing all of her classmates the newest dance moves she learned!
I don’t necessarily consider myself a prude by any means. Sometimes I wear certain outfits because they make my boobs look good. I wear bikinis {read: I used to wear bikinis, before I got the “mom-gut”}. I remember in high school when I thought I was being so scandalous wearing ::GASP!:: a halter top (that completely covered my belly and was not low-cut in any way, shape or form).
Personally, I think I have a cute kid (I know, I’m biased). I think know I’ll be in trouble when she’s a teenager. I don’t need hooker-type clothing and pole dancing lessons helping that out. Thinking about Ry becoming a teenager might just send me over the edge.
All this stuff? Freaks me out.
What do you think? Am I being too protective? Sensitive? Worrying too much? To quote my middle school self…Should I just take a chill-pill? Any great words of advice or encouragement to help tide me over for the next 10 to 15 years?
Please?

Weekend Recap (and a little business)

Let me just start out by saying, what a great weekend! I need more weekends like this last one.

After dinner on Friday, we decided to take a walk outside. The great thing about having 12 acres? We don’t even have to leave our property!
Ry is not the biggest fan of grass in her shoes so once we get to the back of the property where the cut grass is a lot longer, she always asked to be picked up. Daddy always obliges. Mama? Not so much.

Look Ma! I have a blackberry tongue! (Sweet shades, no?)

The beautiful sunset from the back of our property.
Using the last bit of sunlight for a few minutes on the swing.
Saturday morning, Ry was up at a bright and early 6:45 am. We spent the morning watching cartoons and eating breakfast. By 9:30 Ry and I his the road. We had lots of errands to run– Gas station, Target, Costco, Grandad’s house, Winco and 4 hours later, finally back home. Ry fell asleep on the way home and proceeded to sleep for nearly 3 1/2 hours! I used that time to do all kinds of productive things like…eat lunch, check my e-mail and facebook and start 1 load of laundry. After she woke up we played outside before coming in for dinner and wrapping up the day with a bubble bath. Oh, how can I forget!? While at Target we bought some Dora the Explorer undies and she wore them for a couple of hours after her nap. We set the timer for 20 minutes and when the timer went off we ran to the bathroom to sit on the toilet. She never actually peed in the toilet. Oh no…she waited until she was standing on a chair in the kitchen helping me cook dinner. Oh well, at least she was on the linoleum, right?
“Come one Mom…let’s go outside!”
Sunday was a little less than perfect. Why is it that Ry always decides to be a perfect angel on one day, then a total terror the next? She woke up at 7 AM and by 7:15, she had already gone into her first timeout. The morning proceeded as such and by the time Andy got out of bed at 10 AM I had about had it with our child. He laughed at me for getting frustrated with her and when I snapped back at him that he hadn’t been with her for the last 3 hours he responded with the fact that of course he has no idea what I’m talking about because it’s not like he’s with her 5 days a week. Touche, Andy. Touche.
Later that morning, Ry and I headed to Albertson’s to pick up a few things. I had decided that we were going to make cookies later that day! The cookie making was a successful disaster. Ry had a ton of fun “helping” and made a giant mess along the way. Turns out she really loves peanut butter cookie dough. I wish I had a photo of her chocolatey face after “helping” unwrap the mini Reese’s cups we put in the cookies. After the cookies were done, she took a nap. When she woke up from her nap, we put another pair of Dora undies on her for round 2. This time? She peed on the slate. We’re getting there. For Ry, the evening wrapped up with dinner then reading “White Snow” (read: Snow White) on the couch before heading off to bed. After that, Andy and I watched the Bounty Hunter movie with Jennifer Aniston. (funny movie) then headed to bed. Perfect weekend, no?

Now for the business…
  1. I am beginning to feel a bit overwhelmed with everything that needs to be done at the current job before this Friday. And, I have no idea what my workload will be like once I start my new job. So, I may be taking a little time off from the blogging to help ease the stress. Or? Another likely scenario is I will be blogging more to cope with the stress…we shall see. Moral of this story is: don’t be surprised if I don’t post as much in the next couple of weeks.
  2. Mine and Andy’s 5th anniversary is thie Friday. Yes, Friday the 13th…ooo-oohh. Spooky. Ok, not really. But, if you have any fantastic ideas a a fun date we could go on, I am all ears! Please?
  3. I have added a new feature to the blog. It’s called “Intense Debate”. It basically makes commenting on the blog a lot easier. No more annoying word verification junk. So, feel free to comment.
  4. Of course, I can’t forget to remind you to click twice to vote for me on Top Baby Blogs. I am currently on the 4th page…anywhere between #86 and #93. Top 100! Awesome, right? You can actually vote every 24 hours…you know, in case you were wondering.

And, with that, I hope everyone has a fantastic week!

Out of the Zone…in a BIG way!

When I received this week’s e-mail from Mama Kat outlining the different topics, as soon as I saw number three, I knew I had to participate. What is topic number three you ask?

3.) Steppin outside the box (describe a time when you went way out of your comfort zone)

Let me just tell you why this is an easy one…because I am There. Right. Now. Or, maybe out of there? I’m not quite sure how to say that actually. Earlier this week, I gave notice that I was leaving my company for another job. Wow…that was just as hard to type as it was to tell the president of my company.

You guys? I am not just out of my comfort zone, I am out of my comfort world.  I left the zone the minute I started discerning this new opportunity. There is no more zone in my rearview mirror. I am scared out of my freakin’ mind!

I am in no way unhappy with my current job. If I was, leaving wouldn’t be so hard. I love the job I do. I love the people I work with. I am passionate about the sport and I believe in the company I work for. I have been with this company for nearly 4 year. I know the job and what is expected of me. It’s familiar. It’s comfortable.

Now, I am leaving all that behind and I am taking a gamble…that’s hard for me and my type-A tendencies to handle. Don’t get me wrong, by gamble, I don’t mean that there isn’t security…I might just have a meltdown if that were the case. However, it is the unknown. I am looking forward to this new adventure. The opportunities I am going to have with this new company are more than I could have imagined. Knowing that the man who offered me the job has the confidence in me is both humbling and reassuring. I know I need to have the confidence in the gifts and talents God has given me. Speaking of God…hopefully He reads my blog so He can see this and send a little comfort my way!

This move is something that I need to do for me and for my family. But leaving all that I know and love is, well, hard and I am definitely out of my comfort zone.

Mama's Losin' It

Ry’s Camping Adventure

One of the things on our “to-do list” for Summer break was to take Ry on her first camping trip. Andy and I love camping but haven’t been in a couple of years. We decided it was time. {I think I had mentioned in a previous post how since I didn’t have to go to Minnesota we had planned the camping trip, then I ended up having to go. Instead of cancelling the trip, we just decided to move it up a day. I took some of Thursday and all of Friday off and we came home Saturday.}We are both big outdoor people, so we knew Ry would have a blast. We don’t camp in campgrounds which means no running water or toilets. For once this Summer I was happy about the fact Ry isn’t potty trained yet! But, just because we aren’t in a campground, we aren’t really “roughing” it. We packed so much stuff that we ended up having to pull the trailer…because the SUBURBAN just didn’t have enough room. Anyone else see the problem with that statement?! Some things on the “to pack” list included: tent (of course), sleeping bags, sleeping pads, 2 coolers (1 just for drinks, duh), 1 giant red tub for dry foods, 1 giant red tub for other stuff including lanterns, bug spray, towels, etc, our clothes, Ry’s clothes, a pop-up shade tent, a 3 burner camp stove, 5 gal propane, black tub full of cooking supplies (yes, I have a full set of pots/pans/dishes/silverware just for camping), a couple of 5 gallon jugs of water, camp chairs, camp table, oh and we can’t forget the kid and the dog.

Camping with a 2 year old is…well…different. Yes… different is the right word for it. I actually have many words to describe it, but “different” is the best all encompassing word. We had a great time and I can’t wait to go again.

Hope you enjoy the photos as much as we enjoyed our first camping adventure!

We asked Auntie Kristen to come with us and she was able to take Friday off too! I think she had a good time with Rylee…Ry sure does love her Auntie.
Ry ended up a HOT MESS by the end of the first night. That child loves dirt. (And to think I was afraid she’d be a girly-girl…HA!) She made sure to include Baby Yellow in most of our activities, of course. Her blanket got a thorough washing when we got home too. She didn’t quite grasp the concept of “Keep it off the ground”.
We went for a little hike…*little* being the operative word and also meaning short! (Turns out Mom and Dad are really out of shape.)
We played in the little daisy patch in our camping area…(Ry was not as big of a fan of the daisy chain as we thought she would be!)
And of course…we made s’mores! (Ry didn’t really like the marshmellows, but hey, she tried it!)
