“EAT!” They Persisted.
“I don’t want to.” I pushed back.
“This is what this family is having for dinner. If you don’t like it, tough.”
“BUT I DON’T LIKE IT!” I fired back.
“Katherine Elaine, you will sit there and eat until it. If it is still in front of you at bedtime, you will go to bed hungry then eat if for breakfast!” That was the last warning.
I sat with my food in front of me, unwilling to take a single bite.
Ten minutes passed…the rest of the family was done eating.
I sat firmly in place, not touching a thing.
20 minutes passed…all the dishes were done.
There I sat. Alone at the table. In the dark.
It was quiet.
I have no idea how long I actually sat there in the dark, but I do remember this: TGIF was about to come on and there was no way I was going to miss that!
I choked my food down as fast as I could, rinsed my dishes and rushed to the living room.
To this day, I am 100% convinced that nasty food would have been my breakfast the next morning.
And I can’t quite put my finger on it, but for some crazy reason, I’ve never really cared for Ham & Navy Bean Soup.

Haha! I can still hear those words LOUD and CLEAR in my head.
Bleck! Ham and Navy Bean soup sounds gross! Can't blame you for not eating it!
First time to your blog and I like it!
I wrote on the same topic this week; check it out at

I swear my mom made it all the time! Thanks for stopping by!
I can hear those words inside my head as well!!! I have REALLY tried not to say them to my girls……! But shouldn't they suffer like we did???!!! Ha, Ha!
Hahahah…I'm really debating with how far to take it with my little one. Sometimes her food strikes are so ridiculous that I'm tempted to give it to her for breakfast. Maybe when she's a little older. ;)
Those were the rules at my grandparents house! I always had to choke down food I considered my worst enemy, because I HAD seen left over dinners served for breakfast!
Oh NO! I never actually had to eat any of it for breakfast…I wasn't that stubborn.
That is one of my least favorite foods too! Ham and Navy Beans… YUCK! and the beans aren't navy in color! I mean really!
Hahahah EXACTLY! Dumbest name for them ever.
Yeah…I don't see many kids liking Ham and Navy Bean Soup! Yuck! Glad you didn't have to eat it for breakfast…I will admit I gagged when I read that line…hahaha. Great Blog.
I swear I would have had to eat it for breakfast if I hadn't choke it down. That was my worst fear!! Haha. I still kind of gag when I think of that soup.
I used to scrape mine into the trash, or behind the Ozarka water dispenser when my mother would have to leave the room to bathe my little sister. Then a few weeks would go by and she would move the Ozarka thing to mop. And find a bunch of green beans and liver.
Oh by the time I was old enough to do any of that my parent's were on to me…my sisters used to pull that stuff all the time! One of my sisters used to put all of her bread crust on a ledge under our table…it was months before my mom found it. I couldn't get away with anything! Hahah!
